Hey Beautiful People!
Welcome to another edition of the 6 Minute Sabbatical – six minutes of rest talk in your inbox. Today, we’re diving into two conversations that tend to arise regarding Black Women leaving America: the real happiness found in living life on our own terms and debunking the myth that moving abroad is just escapism. Let’s explore these topics and see what’s really going on...
Are We Faking Happiness?
Have you ever noticed how many Black women are stepping into their power, sharing their journeys on YouTube, and truly living life on their own terms? And yet, some folks believe these women are just pretending to be happy. As someone who’s living this truth, let me tell you – the joy, peace, and happiness we experience are genuine.
I'm Stephanie Perry, and I help Black women take sabbaticals, move abroad, and embrace a nomadic lifestyle, all while finding ease and joy. Recently, I celebrated my 50th birthday in Fiji, and let me tell you, the happiness I felt was real and deep. But the happiness I have today wasn’t always this way.
There was a time when I was faking happiness, trying to meet the traditional standards of Black excellence, pursuing marriage, and doing everything on my own. I felt the pressure to fit into a mold that wasn’t meant for me. But when I hit 40, I made a pivotal decision: to define happiness on my own terms. I let go of societal expectations and started living a life that truly resonated with me. The joy and peace I found were authentic and profound.
Many people can’t understand why a Black woman would be genuinely happy without adhering to traditional norms. Some believe we don’t deserve joy, peace, and luxury. But the truth is, we do. Once we realize our worth and stop judging ourselves by external standards, happiness becomes a natural part of our lives.
Is Moving Abroad Escapism?
Another topic that’s buzzing is the idea of Black women moving abroad. Some people think it's a form of escapism, a fantasy to avoid real life. But is it really? Since 2015, I’ve spent more time out of the U.S. than in it, co-creating a community of over 16,000 Black women planning their move abroad. Let's clarify what escapism is and isn’t.
Escapism is seeking distraction from unpleasant realities. While it's essential to seek relief from harm, we’re not looking to distract ourselves from reality. We’re seeking a better, healthier, and more fulfilling life. Moving abroad isn't about living in a fantasy; it’s about creating a new reality where we can thrive.
The idea that Black people should stay put and endure hardship is rooted in anti-blackness. Every human has the right to seek a better life. Moving abroad for better healthcare, community, safety, and overall well-being isn’t escapism; it’s a life improvement.
Embracing Community and Genuine Happiness
Surrounding ourselves with a supportive community is vital. Whether you're traveling or settling abroad, having people who cheer for you and share your vision makes a world of difference. Thanks to technology, fostering such communities is easier than ever.
Remember, moving abroad won't solve internal problems – those require personal work and healing. But changing your environment can alleviate external pressures that contribute to your struggles. If you're considering a move to escape harmful conditions, it’s a valid and brave choice.
Take the Leap!
Sabbaticals are not just for the rich. They’re for us too. We can create pathways to rest, ease, and freedom. Whether it’s house sitting, joining a supportive community, making money online, or getting coaching, there are accessible ways to take that much-needed break.
You deserve to live a life filled with joy, peace, and fulfillment. Don’t let others’ opinions hold you back. Whether you’re taking a sabbatical or planning to move abroad, know that you’re making choices to improve your life, not to escape it.
